Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Oral and dental medicine - Department of Orthodontics Summary: Aim: To evaluate the treatment effects of conventional fixed tongue crib (CFTC) versus mini-screw supported tongue crib (MSTC) in the treatment of patients with anterior open bite due to tongue-thrusting in the mixed dentition stage. Materials and Methods: The sample compromised of 26 children aged 8-11 years, of both genders, in the mixed dentition stage with an anterior open bite of at least 1 mm and Angle Class I molar relationship. The participants were randomly distributed into two equal groups; group 1 was treated using a tongue crib supported by two mini-screws inserted paramedially while group 2 was treated using a fixed tongue crib soldered to bands fitted around upper first molars. Lateral cephalograms and digital models were obtained pre-treatment and after a follow-up duration of 9 months. At the end of treatment, patients' experience was evaluated using a questionnaire. Results: Baseline demographic data, lateral cephalogram and digital model measurements were similar between the two groups. The MSTC group included 12 participants (9 female and 3 male; mean age 9.4 ± 0.75) and the CFTC group included 12 participants as well (10 female and 2 male; mean age 9 ± 0.73). The amount of overbite closure was similar in both groups 4.20 ± 0.50 mm measured on lateral cephalogram and 3.97 ± 1.44 mm measured on digital model for MSTC group. While for CFTC it was 4.22 ± 0.92 mm and 3.97 ± 0.89 mm, respectively. As for the change in upper first molar anteroposterior position, there was a statistically significant increase in the CFTC ( -1.42 ± 0.99 mm) compared to MSTC (-0.53 ± 0.32 mm)
