Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine - Department of Endodontics Summary: Aim of the study : the aim was to compare the effect of single preoperative dose of 400mg of Curcumin or placebo on post-operative pain after single visit treatment. Subjects and Methods: forty four patients suffering from acute pulpitis of mandibular molars were included. Patients were randomly and equally divided into two groups (n=22 per group). Both Curcumin and placebo capsules had the same color and shape and were prepared at the Faculty of pharmacy Cairo University. The capsule was administered one hour before the start of endodontic treatment as single oral dose. Inferior alveolar nerve block was given and root canal treatment completed in single visit. Patients were instructed to record the pain scoring at pre-operative, 1 hour after medication, immediately post-operative, 8, 12, 24 and 48 hours after root canal treatment by using visual analogue pain scale (VAS), as well as state number of analgesic tablets; if taken. Data were tabulated and statistically analyzed. P value less than or equal to 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: VAS absolute values comparing the two groups for each time point, showed statistical significant difference at 8, 12, 24 hours; where Curcumin group presented lower values 44.2, 26.7, 19.1; respectively than placebo 58.5, 43.3, 30.3; respectively
