Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Physical Therapy - Department of Physical Therapy for Surgery Summary: Background: With rehabilitation of post burn hypertrophic scars, different treatment modalities have been known to improve and modulate scar characteristics. Objective: The current study was conducted to investigate and compare the effects of shock wave therapy and Kinesio taping on post burn hypertrophic scares. Methods: The study was conducted on 30 volunteers (age 20-40 years) of both sexes suffering from post-burn hypertrophic scars. Patients were divided randomly to groups A (n=15) and B (n=15). Group A received the shock wave therapy with traditional physiotherapy. Group B received the Kinesio taping with traditional physiotherapy. Scar tonometry and modified Vancouver scar scale measures were taken before and after eight weeks of treatment application for each group. Results: Results using paired and unpaired t tests showed that Kinesio taping always recorded the lowest scar tonometry and modified Vancouver scar scale measures (p <0.05) for both groups in comparison with shock wave therapy. Conclusion: Kinesio tape has a significantly good impact on scar measures of patients with post burn hypertrophic scars as compared to shock wave therapy. So, physical therapists may apply Kinesio taping to a patients during or after treatment and rehabilitation to improve and treat the scar areas
