Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Physical therapy - Department of Physical Therapy for Cardiovasculary and Geriatrics Disorder
Purpose: to compare between the effect of aerobic training and resisted exercises on ventilatory functions on patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Methods: Forty male patients, aged 30- 40 years, suffer from moderate COPD (FEV1 {u2264} 70% of FVC) were recruited from the chest department of outpatient clinic at Al- Zahraa university hospital and were divided into two groups equal in number (A and B). Practical work was done in the department of physical therapy at El- Sheikh Zayed hospital in Monshaat Naser. Peak expiratory flow rate, six minute walk distance, and level of exertion were evaluated before and after completing treatment program for patients in both groups. Group (A) received aerobic training on elliptical trainer at intensity of 60 - 70% of maximum heart rate for 12 weeks (3 days per week); Group (B) received resisted exercises using elastic rubber bands with intensity of 70% of one repetition maximum, for 12 weeks (3 days per week). Results: in groups (A) and (B), there were statistical significant increase in the PEFR, 6 minute walk distance, and decrease in the level of exertion after 12 weeks when compared with the corresponding mean values before initiation of treatment with percent of change 11.57, 7.21, and 17.65% respectively for group A and 4.73, 6.90, and 19.20% respectively for group B. When comparing the post results of groups (A) and (B), there was significant increase of the PEFR of group A more than that of group B with p value= 0.006
