Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Nursing - Department of Nursing Services Administration Summary: Background: nurse managers have a direct contact with staff nurses; therefore, they have the ability to influence nurses{u2019} autonomy. Nurses need autonomy to become powerful, because it is noticed that nurses need to take more accurate and urgent decisions in their work. One of the major responsibilities of nurse managers is to support staff nurses to promote their autonomy by improving their skills, abilities and practices that preserve autonomy of them. Aim: this study aimed to examine the relationship between nurse mangers{u2019} behavior and staff nurses{u2019} autonomy. Design: a descriptive correlational design was utilized to collect data. Sample: a convenient sample of staff nurses (211) working in the selected units during the time of data collection. Setting: the study conducted at Cairo University Hospital and at New Kasr Einy Teaching hospital. Tools: data was collected by using two tools. First tool was nurse manager{u2019}s behaviors, second tool was staff nurses{u2019} autonomy tool. Results: research declared that staff nurses perceived autonomy related to patient care more than autonomy related to unit operation. Moreover, there was a statistically significant positive correlation between all dimensions of nurse manager{u2019}s behavior and all dimensions staff nurses{u2019} autonomy. Conclusion: research declared a statistically significant positive correlation between nurse managers{u2019} behavior and staff nurses{u2019} autonomy as (p=0.00), so supportive nurse managers{u2019} behavior is an underlying factor affecting staff nurses{u2019} autonomy. Recommendations: a training programs should be provided for nurse managers about supportive behaviors, improving staff nurses{u2019} autonomy should be emphasized through policy. Further researches are needed to examine the barriers that nurses face in relation to unit operational decisions
