Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc..) - Cairo University - Faculty of oral and dental medicine - Department of Prosthodontics Summary: Aim: to compare between the growth of bacteria on the fitting surface of maxillary dentures fabricated using conventional PMMA, and dentures fabricated from PMMA modified with titanium dioxide nanoparticles. Methodology: Thirty-four patients were selected according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. Patients were randomly allocated to two groups. Group I received a denture fabricated from heat cured acrylic resin modified with titanium dioxide nanoparticles, while group II received a denture fabricated from conventional heat cured acrylic resin. For both groups, preliminary impressions were taken and poured into study casts. Self-cured acrylic resin special trays were constructed on the study casts and secondary impressions were taken, and master casts were poured. Self-cured acrylic resin trial denture bases with wax rims were constructed on the master casts for the upper & lower arches for jaw relation record. A facebow record was used to mount the upper casts, while the lower casts were mounted according to the centric relation. Setting of artificial teeth was performed, then the dentures were tried in patients{u2019} mouths. For the first denture, normal processing steps were carried out, as for the second denture 5% by weight of titanium dioxide nanoparticles were incorporated with the acrylic resin powder. Flasking, wax elimination, packing and curing were carried out normally. Both types of dentures were inserted in patients{u2019} mouths, and mucosal swabs were taken from both groups. After 1 month mucosal and denture swabs were taken from both groups and cultivated to compare bacterial colonization between both groups
