  • Issued also as CD
Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Engineering - Department of Metallurgy Engineering Summary: Hot tears cracking during solidification is one of the most critical defects in water meter casting industry. In this work, a statistical and metallurgical analysis for the occurrence of the defect was performed. Fish bone analysis for the defect was made. The results pointed towards the gating system and revealed the need to eliminate hot spots. Finite element-based software is used to predict hot spots locations. Optimized gating system was designed and tested both by simulation and experimental and the results showed the complete elimination of the defect in more than ten successive castings
