Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty Of Nursing - Department Of Surgical Nursing Summary: The present study aimed to investigate the effect of implementing a designed nursing intervention protocol on prevention of peripheral intravenous cannulation complicationsTo fulfill the aim of the study the following research hypothesis was formulated : the incidence of peripheral intravenous complications will be lower among study group subject than these among the control group onesquasi - experimental research design was utilized in this studyA Conventience sample of one hundred male , and female adult inpatients in Medical and surgical departments of EL Minia University Hospital connected to peripheral venous catheter , the sample was matched with another one hundred subjects as acontrol group with the following matching criteria : sex , age and agree to participate in the study , educable , both literate and illiterate , duration of cannulation and type of solutionTools used for data collection are ; sociodemographic and medical data sheet , cannula assessment scale , phlebitis assessment scale , and patient assessment sheetDesigned protocol was applied to prevent peripheral venous cannula complicationsResults of the present study revealed that the majority of the study group subjects (94In hundered persent) did not developed any complications compared to (8In hundered persent) of the control group subjectsComplications developed included hematoma , irritation and allergic reaction , extravasation , phlebitis , occlusion , dislodgment and infiltration in a percentages of (0 , 18) , (0 , 5) , (3 , 35) , (0 , 21) and (3 , 13) among study and control group subjects respectivlynd there was a highly significant difference between the study and control group subjects in relation to the development of complications with p - value of (001) thus hypothesis one was supported
