Dissertation note: Thesis (PH.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty Of Science - Department Of Biochemistry Summary: In the present work , studies were directed towards polysaccharide preparations (arose from various natural sources) to be evaluated for some anticipated biological activitiesThe polysaccharide sources include marine algae , leguminous seeds and a bacterial strainThe investigated bioactivities included fibrinolytic , anticoagulant , antiviral and antimicrobial actionsChemical modification of some of the native polysaccharide materials (by sulphation) led to considerable increase in their structural featuresAmong the various polysaccharides investigated , a product isolated from Ulva lactuca (collected from Miami beach in August) , showed distinguishable antiviral and fibrinolytic activitiesThus , it was subjected to additional structural studies and an approximate molecular formula was then proposedThe monosaccharide components of this algal product comprised L - rhamnose , D - xylose , D - glucose , D - glucuronic acid in the molar ratios 4 : 2 : 2 : 1 respectivelyAdditionally , 4 sulphate groups were also found to be attached to the carbohydrate chain
