The protective effect of breast milk against infection was documented as early as 1892 in medical literture by data proving that milk from various species including humans was protective to offspring. The newborn innfant's immune system is immature and inadequate at birth. There are rapid adaptations to the immune system in the early postnatal period related to the natural maturation of the skin and mucosal barriers as well as to the exposure of the infant to various infectious agents
