Peptic ulcer disease (PUD) is a chronic relapsing inflammatory condition that involves ulceration in regions of the upper gastrointestinal tractDrug therapies for PUD are categorized according to their function to : agents that neutralize the stomach acid (antacids) , agents that protect the stomach mucosa such as sucralfate and bismuth compounds , and agents that prevent gastric acid secretions (these are the most effective agents) and these in turn include two categories ; proton pump inhibitors such as omeprazole and lansoprazole , and histamine receptor blockers such as ranitidine , cimetidine , famotidine and nizatidine
