N2  - الانتخابات هي العملية الرسمية لاختيار شخص لتولى منصب رسمى، أو قبول، أو رفض اقتراح سياسي بواسطة التصويت.
من المهم التمييز بين شكل الانتخابات ومضمونها فى بعض الحالات توجد الأشكال الانتخابية، ولكن يغيب المضمون الانتخابى، والغرض من الانتخاب، مثل حالة عدم توفر الخيار الحر وغير المزيف للاختيار بين خيارين على الأقل، فمعظم دول العالم تقيم الانتخابات على الأقل بشكل رسمى ولكن فى العديد من الانتخابات تكون غير تنافسية، مثل حظر الانتخابات على جميع الأحزاب باستثناء حزب واحد.
تتبع الانتخابات فى الديمقراطية الحديثة لملئ المقاعد فى البرلمان، والسلطة التنفيذية أيضاً (الرئاسية –الحكم المحلى)، ولا تقتصر الانتخابات على تلك السلطتين فقط بل تشمل النقابات والأندية.
ولأن الانتخابات تعد هى الطريقة المثلى لاختيار شخص لتولى منصب رسمى، وبالضرورة فإن هذا المنصب يحظى بأهمية كبرى لدي الناخبين بالنسبة للدولة ولتلك الأهمية الكبرى للانتخابات، فإنها تستوجب حماية لها عن طريق وجود قانون يردع كل من يخالف قواعد الانتخابات ويكون لها حماية جنائية.
; 	An election is the formal process of selecting a person to hold an official office, or accepting or rejecting a political proposal by voting. 
It is important to distinguish between the form of elections and their content. In some cases, electoral forms exist, but the electoral content and purpose of the election are absent, such as in the case of the absence of a free and non-false choice to choose between at least two options. Most countries of the world hold elections, at least officially, but in many cases Elections are non-competitive, such as banning elections for all parties except one. In modern democracy, elections are followed to fill seats in parliament, as well as the executive authority (presidential - local government). Elections are not limited to those two authorities only, but also include unions and clubs. 
Because elections are the ideal way to choose a person to hold an official position, and this position is necessarily of great importance to voters for the state and because of the great importance of elections, it requires protection through the presence of a law that deters anyone who violates the election rules and has criminal protection
