Stepping motors have become very popular in many position control applications (like CNC machines , printers , plotters , robots etc) due to their many advantages over the other types of motors (such as DC motors or servo motors) Stepping Motors can be controlled directly by computers and microprocessors without the need for rectifiers or power amplifiers They can also run in open loop systems without position feed back and perform with high precision Accordingly , many control techniques have been developed to drive the different types of the stepping - motor configurations Actually stepping - motor configurations are unipolar , and bipolar motors To control a stepper motor , a proper driver circuit is needed for these configurations Actually there are two types of stepper motor drive circuits , unipolar and bipolar drive circuits Unipolar drive can be used with unipolar motors only Bipolar drive can be used to control both bipolar and unipolar motors Unipolar motors can be connected to a bipolar driver by simply ignoring the center taps (by doing this , the motor becomes bipolar) There are mainly 4 control techniques that can be used to drive stepper motors These techniques are
