Two Egyptian wheat cultivars (T. aestivum L. ev. Sakha 93 and ev. Giza 168) were used to study the effect of trehalose on carbohydrate metabolism of these plants. Accumulation of trehalose in the plant tissue was performed through inhibition of trehalase with the potent inhibitor validamycin A. Raising the trehalose level in plant tissue was accompanied by increase in the content of sucrose in shoot and root of the two cultivars and also increase in the content of starch in the shoot
