Modern hybrids of maize in North America and Europe exhibit a linear increase in grain yield per unit area by increasing population density up to more than 100,000 plants ha⁻¹, as a result of breeding for tolerance to high density. In contrast, modern Egyptian maize hybrids are adapted to low plant density (ca. 57,000 plants ha⁻¹) the same used for old open-pollinated and synthetic varieties
