Transient tachypnea of the newborn ( TTN ) is a common cause of respiratory distress and hospitalization in the neonatal period . Predisposing factors include male sex , maternal diabetes and elective cesarean delivery . TTN results from lack of absorption of fetal lung fluid , which usually resolves in two to five days with oxygen supplementation but can persist in some neonates requiring mechanical ventilation and hospitalization in the neonatal intensive care unit
