An accurate characterisation of melatonin receptor - mediated functions requires MT₁ and MT₂⁻ selective ligands  while pronounced MT₁ selectivity is still a challenge, many MT₂⁻ selective ligands, exemplified by compound 14c, have been reported, most of them behaving as antagonists
