Shear strength of unrestrained steel plate shear walls, SPSWs, was conventionally computed assuming fully yielded in-fill plate and collapse of boundary frame elements by uniform yielding mechanism at ultimate load. Boundary frame elements were proportioned to remain essentially elastic under diagonal tension forces in the in-fill plate except that plastic hinges at ends of beams were permitted. In order to develop full yielding of the in-fill plate, columns of unrestrained SPSWs were required to satisfy minimum inertia requirement that was based on Wagner flange flexibility parameter. On the other hand, ultimate shear strength and design requirements of column-restrained SPSWs were not addressed in current design specifications. In this thesis, the ultimate shear strength and design requirements of unrestrained and column-restrained SPSWs were investigated by the finite element method. Numerical modeling of the wall was established using the commercial software, ANSYS, at which boundary frame elements and in-fill plate were modeled using finite strain shell elements
