The aim of the present study to investigate the hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic and antioxidant activities of ethanolic extract of purslane and sonchus asper in streptozotocin (STZ) - induced diabetic rat. Acute toxicity was studied in rats after the oral administration of purslane and sonchus asper to determine the dose to assess hypoglycemic activity. The median lethal doses (LD50s) of purslane and sonchus asper in rats were 2880 and 4420 mg / Kg b.w., respectively. In rats, purslane and sonchus asper extracts were orally given for 56 days and its effect on body weight, plasma glucose, serum insulin, total cholesterol, HDL - cholesterol, LDL - cholesterol, triacylglycerol, alanine amino transferase (ALT), Aspartate amino transferase (AST) activities, total protein, albumin and globulin, albumin/globulin ratio, creatinine, were determined every 2 weeks (14, 28, 42 and 56 day). Also liver, kidney and heart malonodialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH) and super oxide dismutase (SOD) activity were determined at the end of the experiment. Histopathological examination of the liver, kidney and heart was determined at the end of the experiment
