Moreover, chamomile extracts were reported to guard against chemotherapy/radiotherapy induced oral mucositis owing to its anti-inflammatory activities and the ability to accelerate re- epithelialization. However, limited reports have emerged for the use of chamomile extracts in protecting against intestinal mucositis. Therefore, the aim of the study was to evaluate the potential effectiveness of a specially formulated chamomile extract, MTC 102, in protecting against irinotecan-induced intestinal mucositis. The effect on oxidative stress was assessed by measuring MDA content and GSH/GSSG ratio. Furthermore, several inflammatory mediators were examined such as MPO activity, TNF-Ü, IL-1Ý, IL-10 and NF-mB levels. Additionally, caspase-3 activity as a marker for apoptosis was assessed. Finally, small intestinal segments with or without treatments were isolated for histopathological examination and scoring ER -
