The total energy consumed by cars is estimated by about 83% of the total energy consumed in the transport sector (EEA, 1996b). Emissions at the transport sector are of particular importance where there is no sign to the reduction in the near future (EEA, 1996), and there are many scenarios that indicate that energy consumption in the transport sector could increase by about 40% to 100% in industrialized countries by the year 2050 (IPCC,1996b).
