<br/><br/> Cardiologists need to recognize the potential need in their patients for  future non-cardiac surgery and if non-cardiac surgery is known to be  necessary within a year of PCI and stent insertion, BMS should be used in  preference to DES.4 In patients who have had stents placed recently, elective non-cardiac surgery should be avoided until clopidogrel can be  safely stopped. There are few data to guide the most appropriate  management, and this is an area that urgently needs well-conducted  clinical trials and peer-reviewed guidelines
