Masonry bearing buildings present a significant part of the old buildings in Egypt. The walls of these buildings were mainly designed to resist gravity loads, however lateral loads induced by earthquakes or wind cause severe damage for these buildings. Strengthening of URM buildings becomes urgent to resist lateral loads. In the current study, a numerical investigation is carried out for seismic rehabilitation of four-story load bearing building in Cairo, using carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP). Full 3D nonlinear dynamic analysis was carried out using the Applied Element Method, which was proved to be efficient for such a case where a partial or a total collapse was predicted. The study included two earthquake zones in Egypt, namely zone (3) and zone (5b). CFRP laminates were used in retrofitting with different thickness and different configuration to study the efficiency of this retrofitting technique
