Econazole nitrate is considered the first generation of azole antifungal agents revolutionized the treatment of mucosal and invasive fungal infections. Furthermore, azoles are still the most widely used group of antifungal agents which is classified as imidazole or triazoles antifungal drug that is used for the treatment of topical fungal infections caused by Candida albicans and tinea. Econazole nitrate is a water insoluble drug that create complicated barrier for formulating it in an ocular drug delivery system. Consequently, the rationale of this study was to develop econazole nitrate nanoparticles by nano-spray drying process to increase dissolution of the drug. The effect of using methyl-Ý-cyclodextrin and hydroxylpropyl-Ý-cyclodextrin as carriers for econazole nitrate nanoparticles prepared by nano-spray dryer was explored in this work. Stabilizers were also used as polyethylene oxide, polyvinylpyrrolidone k30, poloxamer 407, Tween 80 and Cremophor EL. Further modifications were done in order to increase the nanoparticles retention time in the eye and to increase drug bioavailability in the tears of Albino rabbits
