Biological and molecular studies on parasites infecting some marine fish in Egypt /

The present study investigated some of the helminth parasites infecting economically important fish species inhabiting shores of Hurghada City along the Red Sea in Egypt. Fish samples were collected monthly during the period from August 2014 May 2015 from boat landing sites and fishermen. Fish under investigation wereEuropean hake Merluccius merluccius lessepsianus, Pinecone soldierfish Myripristis murdjan, Brushtooth lizardfish Saurida undosquamis, Narrowstripe cardinal fish Apogon exostigma, Red spot emperor Lethrinus lentjan, and Thinlip mullet Liza ramada. Prevalence and seasonal variations of parasitic infections among the examined fish species were studied. Three species of digenean parasites were recorded; these were Stephanostomum sp. nov. from M. merluccius lessepsianus, Lecithocladium cristatum from M. murdjan, and Gonocerca phycidis from S. undosquamis. Two species of cestode parasites were recovered during the study; these were Nybelinia sp. nov. from A. exostigma, and Scolex pleuronectis from S. undosquamis. Three species of nematode parasites were isolated; these were Anisakis simplex from M. merluccius lessepsianus, Pseudoterranova decipiens from L. lentjan, and Camallanus sp. nov. from S. undosquamis. One species of acanthocephalan parasites was recorded; this was Neoechinorhynchus agilis from L. ramada. There was a relationship between the body size (length/weight) and sex of the fish host and the prevalence of the parasitic infection. The recovered parasites were studied morphologically and morphometrically by light and scanning electron microscopy. In addition, molecular analyses of SSU rDNA gene sequences for some of the recovered parasites and its phylogenetic relationships were applied to detect their exact taxonomic position.
