Oral lichen planus is an immune-mediated chronic inflammatory disease that affects the oral mucous membranes. It follows a cyclic pattern of exacerbations or flares followed by periods of quiescence, unlike LP of the skin, which has been reported to have a high rate of spontaneous remission.MMP- 9 plays an important role in the pathogenesis of OLP as MMP-9 activators released from T-cells present in OLP lesions helps in activating pro MMP-9 resulting in basement membrane disruption. Green tea polyphenols specially EGCG can be a suitable therapeutic candidate for OLP, as a result of its inhibition of antigen presentation, T-cell activation, proliferation and migration, keratinocyte apoptosis, NF-mβ activation and MMP-9 activity. Therefore the aim of the present study was to compare the effect of the adjunctive use of systemic green tea as supplementary treatment combined with topical steroids versus topical steroids only on the clinical parameters (VAS pain and clinical score) and salivary MMP-9 level in OLP patients. The present study included 30 subjects, 20 patients with atrophic / bullous erosive OLP who were allocated into one of two groups:Group I: consisted of 10 patients who were treated with topical corticosteroids [1 mg/g Triamcinolone acetonide (Kenacort-Aorabase)] applied topically 4 times a day for 1 month. Group II: consisted of 10 patients who were treated with topical corticosteroids [1 mg/g Triamcinolone acetonide (Kenacort-A orabase)] applied topically 4 times a day for 1 month combined with 200 mg green tea tablets taken as one tablet a day for 1 month
