A robust controller with operation under speed variation is selected here, which is the sliding mode controller (SMC). SMC is implemented by using PID controllers, but PID parameter tuning is a challenging task. Such that, a new evolutionary algorithm (EA) is introduced, tested, and finally, implemented to optimize the SMC parameters. The new algorithm is a hybrid differential evolution with linearized biogeography-based optimization (LBBO-DE). A new migration model based on the sigmoid function (S curve) is proposed. Another modification is done; cauchy and Gaussian mutation are used to modify the mutation equation. The controller achieved the reduction of power losses, and hence the generated power is increased. Another direct-drive PMSG model is also used for the oscillations damping purpose under the case of wind speed variation. A simulation of a laboratory prototype is used to damp the oscillations in case of symmetrical and asymmetrical faults. An experimental setup was used to emphasis that the proposed controller can achieve the thesis objectives. The new evolutionary algorithm-based controller gave a good tracking for the maximum power point, reducing power loss and oscillations damping ER -
