N2  - For many growing up in modern Egypt, globalisation and aspiration means inhabiting two cultural systems simultaneously. The result is a vague and sometimes contradictory sense of what it is to be Egyptian. Visual environments-informational, commercial, sacred and historical-stand as a challenge to a search for a rooted cultural identity. Arabic type designers, lokking at successful latin typography, and reflecting on the deep rooted calligraphic traditions of the Arabic language, have become confused about the aims and purpose of their designs. The objective of this research is to shed light on what a contemporary Arabic typeface design might look like
