A 3D finite element analysis study was carried out to evaluate the effect of implant number on stress distribution in peri-implant bone and mandibular overdenture retained by one or two implant. A three-dimensional model of mandible was constructed using data from the computed tomographic image obtained from an edentulous patient. Two models were constructed, one restored with single midline implant retained overdenture and the other restored with two interforaminal implants at canine region. All variables rather than implant number were standardized for all the models. The material properties for compact bone, spongy bone, titanium alloy and acrylic were identified. Two loading conditions were applied vertical loads and oblique load. The model was restrained at it inferior border to avoid total body displacement. The model was meshed and analyzed using a finite element iterative solving method for stress analysis. Under vertical and oblique loading, both models showed stresses in peri-implant bone comparable to each other with slightly increased stresses in single implant model. Under both vertical and oblique loading, the single implant model showed significant increased stresses in denture base near the midline around the attachment system compared to the two implant model
