This thesis proposes a technique to restore lost loads after a fault event in the electrical distribution networks. The restoration algorithm has been coded using MATLAB and tested using ETAP, taking into consideration the different operating conditions of these networks. This thesis introduces a central self-restoration algorithm to enhance the reliability of distribution systems in two stages: Firstly, the planned restoration has been utilized in planning stage of the distribution network to select backup feeder for critical loads. Secondly, the unplanned restoration has been utilized in operating stage of the distribution system under different operational conditions to select the optimum restoring configuration of the outage loads due to the fault. The proposed restoration algorithm has been applied to two benchmarked distribution systems (IEEE 13-Bus, IEEE 14-Bus system) and it proved an effective capability in restoring electrical loads under various operating conditions
