Objectives: to evaluate predictability of new bone formation (clinically, histologically, and radiographically) using either autogenous bone graft or beta tri-calcium phosphate in a calcium sulphate matrix (geneX®) biocomposite graft material, without using any membranes, for maxillary sinus lifting. Materials and methods: The study included eight adult patients (males and females), indicated for open sinus floor elevation procedure with age range 35 to 55 years. The eight patients in this study were divided into two groups, a control group which consists of four patients subjected to sinus floor elevation with autogenous bone graft harvested from the mandibular ramus region and a study group which consists of another four patients subjected to sinus floor elevation with Ý-TCP in a calcium sulphate matrix (geneX®) as a grafting material. Statistical analysis: Statistics was performed using SPSS (statistical package for the social sciences version 15, Echosoft, U.S.A. Data were represented as mean± standard deviation. Unpaired sample student t-test was used to compare the studied group of patients. Results: The 6 months post operative (CBCT) showed new bone formation in the grafted regions. Homegonous fusion between the graft material and newly formed bone was demonstrated. While the histological analysis showed that the autogenous grafts formed new bone faster than geneX®. However both control and study groups have nearly the same quality of bone. Regarding the linear measurements, the study group showed statistically significant higher bone height (BH) mean value in comparison to the control group . Conclusion: Ý-TCP with calcium sulphate can be used as a substitute to autogenous bone grafts in maxillary sinus lifting, but it just takes a longer time to be completely resorbed.
