Objective: to study the incidence of CHD in neonates admitted in the Kasr ElAini NICU over a period of one year, to find possible risk factors and determine associated extracardiac anomalies. Methodology: Cross sectional descriptive study was conducted including all the cases admitted in the period from March 2016 to March 2017. Transthoracic bedside color Doppler echocardiography was done for selected cases based on clinical indications. Results: From a total of 723 studied cases, 180 (24.9%) were diagnosed to have CHD. 23.% of them were full-term. The most frequent CHD was patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) (78.3% of all cases, 71.68% of CHD), followed by atrial septal defect (ASD) (2.5%), ventricular septal defect (VSD) (2.4%), while the least common were Fallot's Tetralogy and single ventricle (0.1% for each). Infants of diabetic mothers were significantly more affected by CHD (p= 0.001). PDA was significantly more common in consanguineous parents (p= 0.04) and in infants of smoking fathers (p=0.03). Extra-cardiac anomalies were present in (12.8%) of cases with CHD, the most common of which was hydrocephalus (2.8%). Conclusion: bedside transthoracic echocardiography is a useful tool in diagnosis of CHD in NICU. Maternal diabetes, paternal medications and smoking could be modifiable risk factors for CHD UR - http://172.23.153.220/th.pdf ER -
