The concentrations of heavy metals were studied in soil, plants, and selected wildlife animals from agroecosystems. The random amplified polymorphic DNA-polymerase chain reaction method was used to examine the genetic variability of Aiolopus thalassinus (Fabr.) populations in heavy metal-polluted and unpolluted locations. Abundance and diversity indices decreased with increasing soil metal levels. Accumulation of heavy metals was more frequent in arthropods and other taxa at lower trophic levels, suggesting that the transfer of trace metals along the vertebrate food web may be of relatively minor importance. Our data did not reveal a clear correlation between heavy metal pollution and genetic diversity ER -
