Hospitalization is the first crises children face especially during the early years. Children experience significant anxiety and fear associated with the preoperative period, throughout play; children can reduce preoperative anxiety and fear. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the effect of selected play activities on preoperative anxiety level and fear among children undergoing abdominal surgeries. One group time series quasi-experimental design was used to achieve the aim of the current study. A convenient sample of 50 school age children undergoing abdominal surgeries participated in the current study. The current study conducted at the general pediatric surgical unit at Cairo university specialized pediatric hospital (CUSPH). Tools for data collection were Structured Interview Questionnaire; State Trait Anxiety Inventory for children (STAIC) and the glasses fear scale (GFS). The results revealed that, children who used the selected play activities had lower preoperative scores on state trait anxiety Inventory for children than before and less preoperative fear scores on glasses fear scale than before. The current study concluded that play activities were effective in reducing the anxiety and fear among preoperative children. It was recommended that establishing preoperative play activities to children undergoing abdominal surgeries is essential for preparing children for surgery
