Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common temporomandibular degenerative disorders. It showed a higher prevalence in women and older age groups. Due to the increasing prevalence and absence of cure for OA, it became a serious health economic burden for the nations. Thus, there is a pressing socioeconomic need for extensive improvements in the prevention and treatment of the disease. Aim of the study: This study aimed to investigate and compare between the anti-inflammatory effect of low level laser (LLL) contra corticosteroids on induced OA in TMJ of Albino rats. Methods: 96 adult female Albino rats weighing about 180-200g were used. Animals received a single intar-articular (IA) injection of 2 mg/kg monosodium iodoacetate to induce OA. Group Ї, the positive control group. Group ЇЇ received seven sessions of 60s LLLT performed every other day for 2-weeks. Group ЇЇЇ was given a single IA injection of 1.2mg/kg dexamethasone. Half of the animals in each group were sacrificed at 1& 4 weeks post treatment. Results: Histopathological examination of rat TMJ revealed degenerative changes and loss of the normal architecture in the osteoarthritic group. These degenerative changes decreased in both treated groups. Safranin-O stain showed obvious reduction and generalized loss in proteoglycans staining in the osteoarthritic group. However, there was a uniform moderate increase in GAGs staining in both treated groups. As for the Masson trichrome stain, collagen formation in the treated groups was higher than that in OA group
