Background: It has been observed that elective AAA repair and operations for rAAA in this country is much less than in the west and hence it may be assumed that the prevalence of this disease is also much less. The problem may be one of diagnosis or an actual low prevalence. Objectives: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of AAA using ultrasound imaging device and to clarify the associated risk factors and normal aortic diameter in a thousand Egyptians as a pilot study. Design: Prospective study. Methods:1000 patients aged 50 years or more were examined by B-mode of Ultrasound at Kasr Al Ainy radiology department to measure suprarenal abdominal aortic diameter (wall to wall measurement ) and to identify the presence of AAA. In this study aneurysm was defined as those with a maximum diameter 1.5 times the mean diameter of the suprarenal aorta [the cut off value was 28.3 mm].Demographic data and risk factors were also noted. Results: Mean (SD) aortic diameter in study population was 18.921 (3.2) mm. Prevalence of AAA is 1.5%. AAAs prevalence of 2.35 % in males vs. 0.75 % in females. Prevalence of AAA in different age groups ; <60 years(n=653) ,60 70(n=282) , > 70 years(n=65) is 6(0.9%) ,6(2.1%) ,3(4.6%) respectively. Patients with AAA were older (P<0.001) and more often male (P<0.001),smokers (P<0.001)
