The thesis discusses Paul Ricoeurs theory of hermeneutics as an example of the influence of religion on literature, as far as literary criticism is concerned. It also uses it as a critical method of approach to the discussion of the spiritual dimensions of the literature of C. S. Lewis and Naguib Mahfouz through the analysis of one focal novel by each of them. These spiritual dimensions are believed to be hidden under the surface of the literal meaning of the texts in question. The reader is the one who is supposed to discover these dimensions through his/her interaction with the texts, not through letting the texts interact with the perspective of any critical theory. The thesis concludes that hermeneutics as a reader-oriented theory of criticism allows readers to relate the text and come out with countless possible meanings that may have not been intended by the author
