Osteoporosis is one of the most common bone related diseases that leads to bone fractures. The application of minimally invasive surgical techniques in the field of orthopedic surgery has created a growing need for new injectable synthetic materials that can be used as alternative for bone grafting. In-situ drug delivery systems are more preferable than orally administered ones for bone regeneration as they can overcome the low bioavailability and unwanted gastric side effects of some orally administered bone-building drugs. Bisphosphonates are the most common osteoporosis drug treatments, acting by inhibiting osteoclast activity and reducing bone resorption and turnover. Risedronate (RIS) is a member of this class of medicaments, however its market product (Actonel® oral tablets) has many precautions and warnings. Formulation of sustained release in-situ forming thermosensitive systems for the delivery of RIS directly into the site of bone defect with less invasive procedures will avoid the complications of major surgery and the unwanted gastric effect of the RIS. Accordingly, our study aims to formulate RIS as sustained release injectable in-situ forming system to be injected at the site of bone injury
