N2  - The condensation of 2-(cyanomethyl)-7-(thiophen-2-yl)-5-(trifluoromethyl)pyrazolo- [1,5-a]pyrimidine-3-carbonitrile (3) with various aromatic aldehydes afforded crossponding substituted pyrazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidines 5a-j. The reaction of compound 3 with aryl diazonium chlorides in N,N-dimethylformamide furnished arylhydrazo compounds based pyrazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine derivative. Also, reaction of compound 3 with 4-aryl azosalicylaldehydes afforded polyheterocyclic compounds based pyrazolo[1,5-a]pyrimidine derivative. The treatment of compound 3 with phenyl isothiocyanate, followed by addition of -haloesters or haloketones afforded polyheterocyclic compounds. Moreover, the enamines compound 3 react with each of hydrazine hydrate, guanidine hydrochloride to give the pyrazolo and pyrimidine derivatives. The structures of all the newly synthesized products were established by their elemental analyses, spectral data and possible mechanism has been postulated to account for their formation. The antiviral activity of some selected newly synthesized compounds was investigated
