The main purpose of this dissertation is to prepare and characterize some synthetic membranes obtained by Gamma Radiation - induced graft copolymerization of acrylic acid (AA) and acrylonitrile (AN) binary system onto LDPE and PPThe optimum Conditions at which the grafting process proceeded homogeneously were determinedSome selected properties of the prepared membranes were studied by Differential Scanning Calorimetric (DSC) , Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA) , X - ray Diffraction (XRD) , Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) , IR , water uptake and Mechanical PropertiesThe use of such membranes for the decontamination of radioactive wastes and some heavy metal ions as water pollutants were investigated by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) These grafted membranes showed good cation - exchange properties and may be of practical interest in waste water treatment whether this water was radioactive or not
