Salvia multicaulis Vahl. is a perennial aromatic plant growing wild in the mountain regions of Sainte Catherine, Sinai. Preliminary phytochemical screening on the air-dried powdered of plant aerial parts were performed. Essential oil of S. multicaulis was obtained by two different techniques, conventional hydro-distillation (HD) and microwave assisted hydro-distillation (MAHD). Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of the essential oil obtained by both techniques was carried out for the first time and compared in terms of isolation time, yields and composition. Phytochemical investigation of the methylene chloride/methanol (1:1) extract of the air-dried aerial parts of the plant resulted in isolation and characterization of two new abietane diterpenods (Salvimulticanol and salvimulticaoic acid) together with four known aromatic abietane diterpenods (2-oxocandesalvone A, candesalvone B, 6-Ü-hydroxycandesalvone B and candesalvone B methyl ester), were isolated for the first time from S. multicalis. In addition, two triterpenoidal compounds (Erythrodiol and Morolic acid) were isolated for the first time from genus Salvia, together with three known triterpenoids (Oleanolic acid, Betulin and Betulinic acid),were isolated for the first time from S. multicalis in the present study. The total extract and isolated compounds were evaluated for their cytotoxic activities towards 10 drug sensitive and drug resistant cancer cell lines. A proposed biosynthetic pathway for new compounds as well as the cytotoxicity and structure-activity relationship of isolated compounds were discussed in this study ER -
