It is crucial to differentiate IBC from other types of mastitis because there are major differences in its prognosis and treatment. Ultrasound is one of the main diagnostic tools for discriminating between the three groups of mastitis through certain signs. Signs such as ill-defined collections, presence of abscess cavity and absence of mass lesions favor the infectious form of mastitis. Absence of collections, presence of mass lesions and infiltrative lymph nodes favor the malignant form of mastitis. Presence of dilated lactiferous ducts favors the non-infectious form of mastitis. Ultrasound also has a major role in short term follow up of simple mastitis cases and in guiding interventional procedures as: Ultrasound guided aspiration and core needle biopsy which are the mainstay in diagnosis and management of inflammatory breast diseases ER -
