Topical nail antifungal drugs have occupied a large space in the pharmaceutical field and market in treatment of OnychomycosisThe majorities of these agents exist in market as creams , lotions , powders , solutions and tincturesThe design of new dosage forms that increase the effectiveness of the drug or improve the characteristics of the already existing dosage form is one of the trends of the pharmaceutical technology and research workTraditionally , topical treatment for Onychomycosis is only able to inhibit the growth of fungal nail infections , but not able to cure themThe lack of efficacy for topical treatment alone is probably due to the fact that the antifungal drugs cannot penetrate the nail plate to reach the infection sites : the nail plate , nail bed (underneath nail plate) , and nail matrix (nail root) The thick nail plate and its dense keratin nature make it a very difficult barrier for a topically applied drug to penetrateIt has been shown , however , that once the nail plate has been removed by either surgical or chemical nail avulsion , topical treatment of Onychomycosis is effective using miconazole or ketoconazole
