Aim of the work: Was to investigate the possible protective role L-carnitine versus induced renal ischemia reperfusion injury in adult male albino rat using histological, biochemical and immunohistochemical methods. Material and methods: This study was conducted on 50 adult male albino rats were divided into 3 groups: control group, induced ischemia reperfusion group and L-carnitine pretreated groups (before induction of ischemia). All these groups underwent histological study using Hx.and E stain, PAS stain and caspase-3 stain.Biochemical study was done using blood samples to detect the serum urea and creatinine levels.Histochemical study was done todetect the levels of MDA ,SOD and GSH .Histomorphometric study was done to detect the mean optical density of PAS stain and the mean area percentage of caspase- 3immunoexpression.All these investigations underwent statistical analysis Results: the present study has found that the pretreatment with L-carnitine has improved the renal functions, decreased the MDA levels, increased SOD and GSH levels with restoring the normal renal arcitechture with reduced areas of apoptotic cells, blood extravasation, pyknotic nuclei and vacuolated cells ER -
