Farming is a risky businessFarmers and farm families are dangerously exposed to a variety of agricultural pesticides on a daily basisMany studies showed that third world countries have registered very high incidences of pesticide poisoning , and other pesticide - related health problems mainly due to improper handling , use , and methods of storageMore than 75 per cent of pesticides are applied directly , by hand or with the physical presence of farmersIn most cases , farmers are not given any proper trainingPesticides may not also carry instructions , particularly in the native language of the farmers , the situation is more serious in the case of farmers who are illiteratesTherefore , the aim of the study was to assess knowledge , attitudes and practices of farmers regarding pesticide and their associated self - reported toxicity symptoms at Shubramant village - Giza GovernorateA convenient sample of 100 farmers (with mean average 43±13) was selected from 4 geographical sectors at the VillageA meeting interview was used for filling in a standardized culturally adapted structured interviewing questionnaire based on United States Environmental Protection Agency questionsThe majority of the study sample (68in hundred) had an unaccepted level of knowledgeMoreover , 58in hundred of the study sample had an unaccepted attitude toward pesticides useWhereas , 89in hundred of farmers had unaccepted practices toward pesticides useMost farmers had self - reported toxicity symptomsFurthermore , a relationship is found between exposure to pesticides , and farmers' pesticide handling practicesThe current study recommending replication of the study on a nationwide large scale project to obtain more generalization of the results and to gain more consciousness about pesticide problem in Egypt
