The thesis is composed of two parts. The first part reports simple, direct and accurate spectrophotometric methods for quantification of PEN-citrate in pure form, pharmaceutical formulation (Cabella®, 2.13 mg/mL) and human serum samples. The %RSD values were {u2264}1.91% while correlation coefficients (r) were very close to unity. High molar absorptivity values and low values of Sandell's sensitivity were obtained indicating that the proposed methods are highly sensitive. The calculated t-values are less than the tabulated ones at 95% confidence level (n=3). This indicates no significant difference between the proposed methods and the standard pharmacopeia method. There is no effect of added excipients present in the syrup formulation or serum components. The second part of this thesis deals with the characterization and structure elucidation of the formed ion-pairs between PEN-citrate and the previously-mentioned sulfonephthaleins. The characterization was performed using elemental analysis, UV-Vis spectroscopy, FTIR, 1H-NMR, mass spectrometry, and thermogravimetric analysis ER -
