Acute renal failure (ARF) is common especially when non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) are used for longer period of time or at greater doses (Efrati et al., 2007). The aim of the present study was to investigate the potential nephroprotective effects of different phosphodiesterase (PDE) inhibitors, namely pentoxifylline, vinpocetine, cilostazol and sildenafil, in diclofenac-induced ARF in rats and to throw some light on their mechanism(s) of action. Pentoxifylline (100 mg/kg/day), vinpocetine (20 mg/kg/day), cilostazol (50 mg/kg/day) and sildenafil (5 mg/kg/day) were orally administered for 6 consecutive days. Renal failure was then induced by i.p. injection of diclofenac sodium (15 mg/kg) on days 4, 5, and 6 in all groups except control group
