In this thesis, an Optimal Fractional-order Adaptive Fuzzy Logic Control (OFO-AFLC) is proposed. It is based on merging the FO to AFLC and driving the adaptation laws using Lyapunov stability and FO lemmas. Noteworthy, the FO and the adaptation gains are chosen optimally using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. The Proposed OFO-AFLC has been applied to unstable and nonlinear system such as the inverted pendulum system in the presence of disturbance. The proposed OFO-AFLC has achieved a superiority over the conventional AFLC. Moreover, an Optimal Fractional-order PID (OFO-PID) control is developed and applied to a Tokamak fusion reactor as a case study on FO calculus efficiency in improving the conventional controller performance. The proposed OFO-PID has given superior results when compared to other competitive controllers especially in the cases of adding disturbance and variations in the reactor model parameters
