Purpose: To quantitatively analyze the Ý-zone and Ü-zone peripapillary atrophy in patients having early POAG using green-light FAF in conjunction with SD-OCT, colored photography and visual field examination. Design: An Observational cross sectional, case control study Methods: The study included 100 eyes (54 patients) of early and moderate POAG and 100 normal eyes (50 subjects). Full history taking, clinical ophthalmological examination, optical coherence tomography for the optic nerve and fundus autofluorescence were performed. Alpha and Beta zones extents were measured. Results: The extent of alpha and beta PPA zones as measured by the FAF had higher values in the POAG patients group as compared to the control group (P-values 0.003 and 0.001 for the total nasal and temporal extents respectively). No significant difference could be detected between the total extents of either zones alone, however the nasal alpha and temporal beta zones showed more values in the POAG patients as compared to the normal controls (P-values 0.002 and 0.024). Using B- scan OCT, the ability to positively detect both zones showed a statistically significant difference between both groups being higher in the control group for the alpha zone and higher in the POAG group for the beta zone (P-values 0.001)
