Mitigating the environmental degradation has been one of the most crucial issues that face the world nowadays due to the threats of global warming, air pollution and the greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions such as carbon dioxide (CO2). As a result, the international organizations started to formulate policies that enhance shifting to renewable and sustainable sources with aim of satisfying the nations energy needs and protecting the environment at the same time. The N- 11 countries depend intensively on energy consumption in promoting their economic growth which raises the concerns of environmental degradation in those countries. Thus, this thesis aims to investigate the potential role of technological innovation and clean energy in mitigating the ecological footprint in the N-11 countries over the period 1992-2015 by applying panel cointegration analysis. The results of the panel cointegration test indicate that the ecological footprint (EF) variable, the clean energy (CE) variable, the GDP per capita (Y) variable, the financial development (FIN) variable and technological innovation (TI) variable are cointegrated in the long run. The results of the Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) indicate a long-run causal relation running from the ecological footprint (EF) variable to the clean energy (CE) variable, the GDP per capita (Y) variable and technological innovation (TI) variable. This implies that the environmental degradation (measured by the ecological footprint variable) faced by the N-11 countries leads to shifting towards clean energy sources and technological innovation in the long-run
